THESIS) - WILLIAM FAULKNER: TIME AND MITHOLOGY Manoel Ferreira Neto: THESIS
V PART
The most discerning moralists have shown how a desire reaches beyond itself. Pascal believed that he could discover hunting, for example, or in a hundred occupations, the need of being diverted. He revealed that in any activity which would be absurd if reduced to itself, there was a meaning which transcended it; that is an indication, which referred to the reality of men in general and to his condition. Dostoiévski had a great love and passion for Gogol. He ever said Gogol knew how to laugh at his own face, at his own circumstances and situation, at his own human condition.
Let´s try to keep away from us our notion does our comprehension and understanding, our notions of the self and use a king of language in which the subject is absent.
In accepting the Nobel Price, Faulkner stated his cred as a writer: it´s privileged, the writer, to help his fellow man by lifting his heart, by reminding him as the courage and honor and compassion and pride and pity which have been the glory as the past.
The setting of a story - the specifically time and places of the events - is really a dominant element. Setting in adressed in only to kinds of fiction the local-color story which focuses on the interesting peculiarities of a particular region, and historical fiction, which concentrates on a specific era.
As Jean-Paul Sartre has shown, time in particular undergoes strange treatment in Faulkner narrative. The story is continuously delayed by parenthesis and interpolations. It unfolds backward against the grain, instead of proceeding toward the future as one world normally expects. Each episode wrapped in obscuring, sends the reading, the reader back to one another; equally obscure, which occurred twenty or thirteen years ago.
"Probably it happened before I could remember..."
We felt that truly effective symbols were produced almost unconsciously when the author was no deeply absorbed in his story that he made it larger than life.
Whether not to split up the senses, let them appear espontaneously, we´re invited to forget parenthesis and interpolation within the structure of the language, the grammar which origins the structure and turn tem into communication and expression; we´re invited to forget the sensiveness of the memory; we´re invited not to consider the memory as a whole. Sartre never worried about the language, so that some aspects and features of Faulkner´s style couldn´t be forgotten, denied.
Sartre explained in reference to Sartoris, that in his narrative Faulkner allows events that have already taken place. And so one it is in "Sound and The Fury", where all the actions has place off stage, has taken place off-stage. The present is but a past future. Likened to the genuine past, it is powerless, colorless, and void. Even in the consciousness of the characters who should, it seems, be living it, the present is completely screamed out by earlier events. Only later does it appear, and almost ways in the consciousness of another character. Having in its turn becomes a past, it has acquired the massive immutability of the past - like young Chinese women who must wait to grow old before they become mother´s-in-law, grandmother´s, before they can reign over the household.
"Sartoris" was Faulkner´s first novel to be set in the fictional Mississipi county of Yoknapatwapha, whis has to provide the setting for many of his best now works, masterpiece. It shows the contrast between unscrupulous rising class and the older. Southern Families there are swept away by them.
"The Saga of Yoknapatwapha County, 1820-1945, being the first chronological picture of Faulkner´s mythical county in Mississipi - in effect a new work, though selected from his best published novels and stories - which his account of one of the principal families written especially for this volume".
Misfortune lies in his beginning being time bound. Such is the real subject of the book. And if the technique Faulkner has adopted seems at first a negation of temporality, the reason is that we confuse temporality with chronological. It was who invented dates and clocks. Whether man is a sum of his misfortunes.
"Constant especulation regarding the position of mechanical hands on an cubetray dial which is a symptom of mind funcial. Excrement Father said like sweating".
In order to arrive at real time we must abandon this invented measure which is not a measure of anything.
"Time is dead as long as it is being clicked off by little wheels; only when the clock stops time come to life."
Thus, Quentin´s gesture of breaking his watching has a symbolic value, it gives us access to a time without clockings. Te time of Benjy, the idiot, who does not know how to tell time is also clockness.
At certain times, we seem to witness a sudden solidification of time as it congeals into a past and becomes isolated from the rest of duration.
"We would contemplate the inexplicable and fading fure of the past twenty for hours circled back to itself and become whole and intact and objective and alread vanishing slowly like the damp of a lifted glass on a bar."
